Facebook ad reach is the number of unique people who see your ad, calculated from total impressions and how often each person sees it.

Formula

Impressions = Budget ÷ CPM × 1,000 · Reach = Impressions ÷ Frequency

Worked example

A $2,000 budget at an $11 CPM generates about 181,818 impressions, and at a frequency of 2 that reaches roughly 90,909 unique people.

Impressions = budget ÷ CPM × 1,000. Reach = impressions ÷ frequency, where frequency is the average number of times each person sees your ad. Lowering frequency stretches your budget across more people.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good ad frequency? +

For cold prospecting, keep frequency around 1–2 to maximize reach. For retargeting, 3–5 is fine. Above 5–7 you risk ad fatigue.

Is reach the same as impressions? +

No. Impressions count every time your ad is shown; reach counts unique people. If 1,000 people each see your ad twice, that's 2,000 impressions and 1,000 reach.

How can I increase reach without spending more? +

Lower your CPM by broadening targeting and improving ad relevance, and keep frequency low so each impression hits a new person rather than repeating to the same audience.

What is the difference between reach and frequency? +

Reach is how many unique people saw your ad; frequency is the average number of times each of those people saw it. Impressions equal reach multiplied by frequency.

Is a higher reach always better? +

Not for conversion campaigns. Broad reach suits awareness goals, but for sales a smaller, high-intent audience seen a few times often outperforms maximum reach.
